The Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a Cognitive Interviewer (CI) to conduct structural interviews in person one-to-one with an anesthesiologist study subject after each clinical simulation scenario for the IMPACTS Simulation study of clinical decision making. The interview will capture the decision-making process of the subject as they describe the simulated clinical event and how they dealt with it. The CI will use a set of interview techniques selected by the project staff and as delineated in a Cognitive Interview Guide and described and practiced in training sessions. 

Work Schedule: Must be flexible regarding scheduling and assignments. The CI will need to be available to work Saturday shifts to accommodate Simulation Center at VA Palo Alto, Simulation Center Staff, Principal Investigator's, and study subject's schedules. There will be approximately 12 experimental sessions over approximately a one-year period, each requiring approximately 8-10 hours of cognitive interviewer time.  In addition, there will be additional sessions for practice of interviewing and full session rehearsal (2-4 sessions) and possibly some makeup study sessions, plus additional time for training.

This is a part-time (0-19 hours a week), non-exempt (hourly-paid) position. Location: Palo Alto, CA.

PAVIR is a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). As a condition of employment, all PAVIR employees are required to have an approved Without Compensation (WOC) appointment with VAPAHCS and complete a background check before they can commence work.


  • On each study day, watch 4 simulation scenarios (approximately 15-20 minutes) involving assigned study subject;
  • Document and note key occurrences during each scenario for possible use in the forthcoming cognitive interview;
  • Conduct a cognitive interview (approximately 45 minutes) with the assigned study subject following each of the 4 simulation scenarios;
  • Communicate and discuss relevant issues concerning the interview process or the analysis of interview data collected with project investigators & staff;
  • Attend trainings and rehearsals at the VA Simulation Center.


EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in psychology, mental health, biology, anthropology, or in a related field is required.

License: if using a vehicle to travel to training locations, valid Driver's License is required.


Required: Some analogous experience. The study staff will provide on the job training about interview process and/or clinical environment;

Desired: Experience with conducting structured interviews and exposure to clinical environment.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Must be flexible regarding scheduling and assignments;
  • Ability to understand VA regulations and procedures regarding research;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to comply with the cognitive interview guide;
  • Ability to read and understand the study protocol;
  • Ability to complete directed tasks independently;
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word;
  • Ability to learn how to use Quicktime and Open Broadcaster Software (OBS).

Physical Conditions: Frequently stand, walk, and sit to perform desk-based computer tasks; meet with study subjects. Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time.

Environmental Demands:  Exposure to an office and clinical environment. Occasional travel will be required.
